What commonly causes delays

- 02There are different kinds of restraining order — domestic violence, civil harassment, elder abuse, workplace violence — and each has its own form set. Which one applies is a legal question.
- 03The restrained person has to be served personally, and there are rules about who is allowed to do it. You cannot serve it yourself.
- 04A temporary order lasts until the hearing. Missing the hearing generally ends it.
- 05Renewals have to be requested before the existing order expires.

Yes. One Safe Place in Redding provides free confidential support to victims of domestic violence, and the Shasta County Superior Court operates a self-help centre. Both can assist with restraining order matters at no charge, and it is worth contacting them.
Will the other person find out where I live?
The forms include provisions about confidential addresses. What is required on each form and how confidentiality works is set by the court, and Beacon can point you to the court's published information. If your safety depends on this, speak with an advocate or an attorney before filing.
How quickly can the paperwork be prepared?
Timing depends on the document type, the court's requirements and how quickly the information is provided. Say on the first call that the matter is urgent. If you are in immediate danger, call 911 rather than waiting on paperwork.
Can Beacon go to the hearing with me?
No. A Legal Document Assistant cannot represent you or speak for you in court. Victim advocates can often accompany you to a hearing for support, and the court's self-help centre can explain what to expect.
